This week on Saturday Morning we feature the new solo project from Sweden’s Karin Dreijer Andersson, Fever Ray. Both the name of the project and album, it reflects the intensity and anxiety, as well as the luminescence, of the music. This is an album of hypnotic music and half-formed thoughts written during the months after Dreijer Andersson delivered her second baby. She says she prefers to write in that “awake but exhausted” dream-like state. Her music is like a beautiful, and at times chilling, sonic translation of that state. Hi All,

I got hold of an advanced copy of Elvis Perkins new album, Elvis Perkins in Dearland, and will be featuring it on the show this Saturday. Elvis is a contemporary folk musician who mixes inspired lyrics with a range of musical influences from New Orleans Jazz to funeral derges. He is the son of Anthony Perkins of “Psycho” fame (who died of AIDS in 1992) and Berry Berneson, a Life magazine photographer. She died on American Airlines flight 11 after it was crashed into the World Trade centers on September 11, 2001. He was in the process of writing his first album, Ash Wednesday, when his mother was killed, leading him to interrupt the process for a year. Ash Wednesday was ultimately released in 2007, and was strongly influenced by these two great losses in his life. While Elvis Perkins continues to explore issues of life and death in Elvis Perkins in Dearland (also the name of his band), there is more is more celebratory tone on this album. I think it will prove to be one of the best albums of the year.

I will also be playing new music from Laura Gibson’s haunting and beautiful Beasts of Seasons.

It's called March of the Zapotec/Realpeople-Holland. it's actually a double ep featuring music from an earlier carnation of a Zach Condon band (Realpeople) and music written, if not recorded, before Beirut. Maybe I'm experiencing a little post-obamamania, but decided to stay home this morning. The plate seems to be spilling over more than ever and before contracting some miserable drippy, whiny, hacking, feverish, spewing, sweating, cramping, crying-for-my-mother illness I'm sitting home writing this. Oh, and sleeping. Well, I was. And will again. Sleep that is. And, resting. And, working. Always with the working. And...

...being thankful for everyone and everything I have in my life. I'm one fortunate fella. So, it's not really me time. It's more like taking stock time, or counting blessings time, or I woke up and am still alive time, how wonderful.

So, to anyone who cares, Saturday Morning will be on break today and the next two Saturdays. Saturday mornings will come and go, but just without Saturday Morning.

In Memory of Ed Softky

I was going to write to say I am out of town and won't be doing the show this week. And, that's true. But I just found out that my friend Ed Softky was killed yesterday morning on High Street in Brattleboro. Ed was one of the sweetest, kindest, and most genuine human beings I've ever met. His death teaches us that life is temporary and we never know when the end will come. Knowing Ed, he is right now praying and so happy to die like this if it will benefit other sentient beings.

I am sad, or, maybe, more sorry he is dead. Ed made this world a better place. He was the kind of human being the world needs. We need more people like Ed, not less. So, while his death offers lessons for us all, our world is worse for his loss.

Well, my 13 year old daughter finally did something very…well…13. She just woke up and told me she needs to go to the band rehearsal that she decided not to go to, and that it’s at 9, not 9:30, as she originally thought, and will that be okay. So, being dad and super dj bslammin are not compatible roles today. I share all this with you just in case you were planning to tune in. I know this is two weeks in a row and you are all jonesing for some fresh tunes, but I promise (as much as I have control over anything) that I will be on next week. In the mean time there is always Scott Simon on NPR, a reasonable alternative.

Former Concord Monitor (NH) photojournalist Preston Gannaway won a Pulitzer Prize for her photos in a series of articles which “chronicle the death of Carolynne St. Pierre, a Concord NH woman who wanted to leave her children with a record of her final months.” Ms. St. Pierre was a nurse who left behind her husband and three children as well as many other loved ones. The online version is this amazing, beautiful photo-audio slide show called “Remember Me.”

This powerful multimedia documentary is uplifting and heartbreaking. The story and story-telling are life changing.

It's A Dance Party This Satuday Morning

The Foals new album Antidote will be the feature artist/album this Saturday Morning. The Foals have a dance/pop quality to go along with their alt-rockness. From their Wikipedia entry:

"Foals are an indie rock band from Oxford, England. The band are signed with Transgressive Records in Europe and Sub Pop in the USA. A full length album—entitled Antidotes—was released on 24 March 2008 in the UK, and will be released in the USA on 8 April. It was originally to have been produced by Dave Sitek of TV on the Radio^[1] but the band discarded Sitek's final mix and remixed the entire record themselves because Sitek's heavy use of reverb had given their recording a "spacey" sound that they disliked."

I've been listening through the album all week and am liking what I'm hearing. These guys have been around since 2005 and this looks to be their debut album. I've done a couple more music reviews for Word of Mouth on New Hampshire Public Radio. I'm crap, but the music we review is great stuff, and so is the host, Virginia Prescott. So, definitely worth a listen for leads on some good new music.

We talk about Meiko here and we did a round up of three groups (Born Ruffians, The Mountain Goats, and Thao and the Get Down Stay Down) on Monday here. The round up may air tomorrow at 2 pm on NHPR.

Hi Kids. New Hampshire Public Radio is in the process of putting together a cool new show called Word Of Mouth.

Here's the description from their website:

"Word of Mouth is all about what's new. It's both a radio show and a blog, and together they take the latest ideas and trends from every aspect of our culture and put them under a microscope. WoM covers everything from healthcare and the environment, to technology and the internet, to books, movies, music and TV."

Right now it is alive via a blog site which you can check out here.

Last week they invited me to chat with the host Virginia Prescott about the new Jesca Hoop CD, Kismet. You can listen to the review here. It was cool fun, and I am hoping to do it again. Virginia is great, and I think it's going to be a great show. It will be live weekdays at 2 p.m.

This week we feature the newest from Radiohead - In Rainbows - on Saturday Morning. When the band decided to offer this album as a download from their web site in the fall of 2007, and allow fans to name their price for the CD, it took the record and music industry by surprise...and by storm. Along with some of their fellow musicians, Radiohead is participating in - and leading - a not so quiet revolution in the music world.

In Rainbows is filled with the kind of invention and experimentation Radiohead fans have come to expect and long for. Innovation is the name of the game, and In Rainbows doesnt' disappoint.

...and happy new year. I think 2007 went pretty well, all things considered. I hope you feel the same way. Of course, 2008 can be even better. I hope yours is. The best way to make your life meaningful is by trying to benefit as many other people as possible. Let 2008 be the year of the other. Let's try to take better care of each other, eh? What do think? The whole "it's all about me" is so 2006, or 1990s. Let's make this the "Others Decade" instead of the "ME" decade.

On the music front, I'm looking forward to the coming year. I have a feeling we're in store good things.

Thanks to all for supporting Saturday Morning. It's great fun for me, and, I hope, the music your hear on the program introduces you to new kinds of creativity and inspiration.

Hi there,

Sorry to be absent this Saturday past. Absent minded too. Forgot to leave a quick post to let you know I was not able to do the old show. I plan to be there this coming weekend. Looks like, at the moment, that we'll feature the new release from Iron and Wine...but like everything else in life, this could change.

I got a comment today asking about my favorite band. Hard to say. I can tell you what I've been listening to in the car. I have a rotation going between and among Beirut, The Cinematic Orchestra, and Kaki King. Past recent favs have included Fiest, Appassionato by Yo Yo Ma, Imogen Heap, Kate Havnevik, Rodrigo y Gabriela, Pacha Massive, Andrew Bird.....

I played Jack Johnson's In Between Dreams repeatedly for months, much to my children's displeasure. Now, my interests move with the winds. Like a bird, I don't stay in one place long. Each we I pick a feature artist that is someone whose music I like. I often start listening to them for a while after featuring them on the show.
